While rooting will undoubtedly unlock the restrictions of your carrier, you may want to keep in mind that this will also void your warranty. If that doesn't bother you, then continue on...

Some of the benefits of rooting your phone are:

making a nandroid(full back-up of phone) accessible via custom recovery
manipulate CPU -which lets you speed up or slow down your chip for more performance/battery life
use apps that require root permissions

There are different types of methods for rooting. I will not post specific ways on how to root specific devices, but instead a general overview. Some different rooting methods consist of:

Towel Root Method

It might be of best interest to research the described method above on how to root. Goto: System Settings> About Phone> Model Number and post the model number/ and or letters into a search engine along with the word "root" and review the results. Do not forget to READ through the comments, to see how this rooting method is working for other people. Reading comments of others may save you and your phone from a catastrophe.

Also, be sure to check that USB Debugging is enabled on your phone before starting a rooting process. You can do this by going to: System Settings> Developer Options> USB debugging.
